I am mum to 3 little girls.... and one of the joys of having girls, be it daughters, granddaughters, nieces or friends children is the joy and sheer magic that the thought or idea of real mermaids brings. A trip to the beach isn’t complete unless my daughters ‘see’ a mermaid swimming far off in the ocean. They ask constantly “ mummy, are mermaids really real? “ and the wonder in their eyes and the beauty of letting their imagination run wild truly is a beautiful thing.

Now, I’m not really one for toys. My kids have got plenty and to be honest I cringe at the thought of buying more toys at birthdays or Christmas but one in particular holds a special place in my heart as it brings an enormous amount of joy, laughter, imaginative play and absolute fun to our weekends – the Merfin mermaid tail.

We came across these about 4 years ago when my number 1 was only 4 and she was instantly obsessed. As a big fan of Ariel, Barbie in a Mermaid Tail and H2O (if you have daughters you’ll know what I’m talking about) her birthday gift that winter was her first fin and mermaid swimwear set complete with mermaid scale leggings and for the first few months it was played with inside pretending to be a mermaid. When Summer hit she transformed from a mediocre swimmer into a fish!

Daughter number 2 came along who prefers to sit on the pools edge and play with her fin while her sister splashes around her, and now number 3 has a new fin and refuses to get in the water without being decked out in her full mermaid swimming costume and lil’ fin (complete with floaty as she is only 3!).

Christmas last year bought with it an adult fin for me so I can race my eldest up and down the pool like a mermaid as well as a fantastic underwater camera to make mermaid movies with to show their friends.

I can’t tell you how many fun and truly wonderful times we have had as a family playing with our fins and enjoying our pool, or on trips to the bay. My four nieces also have fins and when all the girls get together the most wonderful childhood memories are made.

The investment in the whole set is soon forgotten and when you see how much the kids play with them and enjoy their summer (or many summers) as a mermaid, you will not only be buying them for all the other little girls in your life but perhaps one for yourself too (yes, they have adult sizes :-)).

I find these are safe to use, made from structurally strong and durable materials that stand the test of time and truly work to make you feel free as a mermaid in the water.

They are available at Carla Swimwear stores and Carla Swimwear Online and the pieces retail between $39.95-$99.95.
